State Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Hirut Zemene received Mr. Graham Maitland, Director of Africa Division, Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations on Tuesday (August 22, 2017).
Mrs. Hirut pointed out that Ethiopia has been playing a significant role in the maintenance of peace and security in the Horn of Africa, adding that her country is also a key player in regional integration processes.
On Somalia, the State Minister noted that AMISOM has been playing a critical role in terms of the security gains made so far in the fight against Al-shabaab.
The State Minister, however, stressed on the need for a predictable funding for AMISOM in a bid to support its operational capacity.
Mrs. Hirut also said Ethiopia is supportive of South Sudan’s national dialogue as well as the UN Secretary General’s initiative to reinvigorate the peace process in the country.
In his part, Mr. Graham took the opportunity to thank the Government of Ethiopia for its contribution to the promotion peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
He added that the UN would continue to cooperate with Ethiopia with the view to ensuring regional peace and security.
